FT. MYERS (Fla.) — As a significant number of Lee County high school seniors continue to fail the FCAT, Rasmussen College in Ft. Myers has developed a free ACT preparation course to help graduating seniors earn a diploma rather than certificate of completion.
Due to the considerable number of Florida high school students who fail to meet the FCAT requirements for graduation, the State of Florida Department of Education is allowing students to take the ACT as a comparable test format. Historically, students who failed to pass the FCAT were given a certificate of completion, which is not accepted by all colleges. By taking the ACT, students have an alternate method for earning a high school diploma.
Many students are deterred from existing ACT preparatory courses because the cost is high and the availability of courses is limited. Rasmussen College is offering the courses free to Lee County high school students who are seeking an alternative to the FCAT.
“As a part of our contribution to the community, we want to make sure that our high school students are getting the most opportunities that they can to excel and succeed,” Rasmussen College Campus Director Eric Whitehouse said. “The free ACT prep course is a chance for students who have been struggling with the FCAT to take an alternate test and to be fully prepared for it.”
The course will be taught by Lehigh Senior High School reading teacher Michelle Start, who has had much experience teaching the ACT preparatory course.
“Michelle Start is an accomplished teacher who has had a great deal of experience preparing students to take the high school exam. With her help, our high school students will have a chance at a brighter future.”
The free ACT preparation course begins January 6 and will run every Tuesday and Thursday from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. There are twenty-four seats available in the program. Application and acceptance into the course will be ongoing as long as seats are available. Preference will go to high school seniors who are closer to graduation. However, juniors are also welcome to apply.
For more information on applying to the free ACT preparatory program at Rasmussen College, please contact High School Admissions Representative Mark Runco at (239) 477-2100 or by email at Mark.Runco@rasmussen.edu.
Classes for the ACT preparatory program will take place at Rasmussen College located in The Forum at 9160 Forum Corporate Parkway in Ft. Myers.
