MINNEAPOLIS (Minn.)—Rasmussen College and the Bismarck Veterans Memorial Library are hosting an event featuring North Dakota author and Poet Laureate Larry Woiwode on Thursday, August 20 at 7:00 p.m.

Woiwode will discuss his book, A Step from Death: A Memoir at the Bismarck Veterans Memorial Public Library. The book is a true account of a farm accident which almost cost Woiwode his life. A memoir to his son, Joseph, Woiwode weaves strands of his writing life, his teaching life and his family struggles into a colorful chronicle of his life’s journey.

Woiwode’s first novel, What I’m Going to Do, I Think (1969) won critical claim. He also sold more than 2 million copies of this 1975 novel, Beyond the Bedroom Wall. Woiwode has received two awards from the American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters. He has also been nominated for the National Book Award.

Originally from Carrington, North Dakota, Woiwode is now a visiting professor at Jamestown College and teaches poetry and writing classes.

In the month leading up to the event, Rasmussen College Bismarck campus will be sponsoring various book club discussions.

“We are excited for this amazing opportunity to hear Larry speak,” Rasmussen College Bismarck Campus Librarian, Chandra Hirning said. “We are honored to have him, and he will be taking questions from the audience and also signing books,” she added.

Woiwode is a former actor and graduate of the University of Illinois. He received an American Academy award in 1980 and an Award of Merit from the American Academy of Arts and Letters in 1995.
