Minneapolis (Minn) — Rasmussen College has been approved in Illinois to begin offering a Medical Assisting Degree on its Rockford and Aurora campuses.
About 148,000 jobs in Medical Assisting are expected to be created in the field through 2016 thanks to an expanding health care industry, technology advances in medicine, and the aging population, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
The Medical Assisting Degree program brings together academic principles and practical skill development to teach students how to assist doctors and nurses as they care for patients. Graduates are exposed to medical terminology, anatomy, pathology, and basic concepts of pharmacology and psychology. Students are taught applicable healthcare skills including how to measure vital signs, administer injections, and perform venipuncture (taking blood).
"We envision our graduates as an integral part of one of the fastest growing positions in healthcare," Director of School of Allied Health, Lorrie Laurin said. "We continue to see a considerable spike in job opportunities for medical assistants," she added.
According to the Bureau of Labor, the healthcare industry will generate 3 million new wage and salary jobs between 2006 and 2016, more than any other industry.
